

NEW BERN - Joyce Isabelle Mock Herring, age 96, went to be with her Lord on May 5th 2016, at her home in New Bern, with her daughter and family. Born on July 11, 1919 in Alexander County at the historic Mock House, Joyce was the oldest of six sisters. She grew up there until going to nursing school at Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Morganton, NC. After graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1941, Joyce worked with Tuberculosis patients at the Western NC Sanatorium. It was there she met her husband, Cowles Mead Herring, Jr., while nursing his father, Cowles, Sr., and they married in 1949.
Joyce was a lifelong nurse, later working with Dr. Joseph Patterson at his office in New Bern, then at Craven County
Hospital, and then retiring from Cherry Point Naval Hospital, Cherry Point, NC in 1989. Joyce was loved by so many, as such a loving, caring, selfless woman, never failing to help anyone in need. She is affectionately remembered as “Nana” to not only her family, but so many other friends and relatives. As a devoted member of Village Chapel Presbyterian Church in America, New Bern, she is remembered for her delicious desserts, her spot in the pews, and helping maintain the church’s prayer chain.
She is survived by her only daughter, Courtney Allyn “Lynnie” Herring Flanagan, and husband James “Jim” Flanagan, of Havelock, as well as her beloved grandchildren; Angel Allyn Daughety Blaylock, and husband Michael, and Noah Owen Mead Daughety, all of New Bern; and Isaac Owen Mead Daughety, and wife Jan Terrell Daughety, of Havelock. In addition she’s survived by her much loved great-grandchildren; Ayden, Hunter, and Jocelyn Blaylock, and Claire and Isabelle Daughety of the homes. She is also survived by a foster son Barry Mead Herring, and wife Kathleen White Herring, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and foster grandchildren Andrew Mead Herring, and Jillian Courtney Herring Metzger, and foster great grandchild, Andrew Mead Herring, Jr. Joyce is also survived by her sisters; Juanita Mock Harris, and Willie Mock Daniels of Statesville, NC, and Mary Mock Houser, and husband Joe, of Cornelius, NC, as well as many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Cowles Mead Herring, Jr., in 1979, her parents, Roy Lee, and Ruthie Moose Mock, of Statesville, NC, as well as her sisters; Delores Mock Hood, of Charlotte, NC, and Rose Mock Waugh, of Statesville, NC.
Funeral services in New Bern will be held at 2:30 pm, Monday May 9th at Village Chapel PCA, 908 Madame Moores Lane. Viewing will be at the church just prior to the services, from 1 until 2:30pm. Family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.
Funeral services in Stony Point, NC, will be held at 2 pm, on Wednesday, May 11th at Marvin United Methodist Church, 671 Marvin Church Ct. Viewing will be held at the church , just prior to the services from 1 to 2pm. Both services will be conducted by the Rev. Norman Evans. Burial will be immediately after the funeral at Marvin UMC, in the Old Union Cemetery. Family will receive friends after the graveside service at the church Fellowship Building.
