It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected and devastating passing of Justin August Carey Jr., who went home to Jesus on June 17, 2025 at the young age of 23 years old. Justin was born on December 13, 2001, in New Bern, North Carolina, to Justin and Sandy Carey. Although he grew up as a military child and lived in many places throughout his life, New Bern, North Carolina was his home at the time of his passing.
Since October 2022, Justin worked for Coastal Diesel Services, where he was known as a valuable, hardworking, and deeply respected team member. His coworkers remember him not just for his strong work ethic but for his generous spirit and always having a smile on his face.
Justin is preceded in death by his baby brother David Carey, his aunt Kim Beacham, his granddaddy David Taylor, and his great-uncle Jeff Carey. He is survived by his parents, Justin and Sandy Carey, his sisters Brittnie Hall, Brooke Balch, Alexis Carey, and Victoria Carey, his three children Julianna August Carey, Justin August Carey lll, and Kinlyin Carey, his nieces and nephews Knox Hall, Janesleigh Balch, Josie Balch, and Liam Hall, and his girlfriend Ashlyn Cahoon who will all miss him dearly.
Justin will be remembered for his loving, generous heart, his goofy spirit, and his infectious grin. His presence lit up every room, and his compassion left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
There was nothing more important to Justin than his family. His ability to be selfless was a beautiful reflection of the heart of Jesus. If he wasn’t working or spending time with loved ones, he was likely helping someone in need—something he did often and without hesitation.
The family has not designated a specific charity, but they believe the best way to honor Justin’s memory is through a random act of kindness—a fitting tribute to a man who would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.
Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the Carey family.
