
Ludwig Francis Hartung was born on March 7, 1935, in Portland OR. He attended St. Rose Elementary School and Central Catholic High School. He was a graduate of Oregon State University where he received a bachelor of science in Geology. Lud participated in the ROTC program during college and was commissioned as an officer in the U. S. Air Force on March 23, 1959. He spent his first year in Grand Forks, North Dakota, followed by a year in Sondrestrom, Greenland. Lud’s next assignment was in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, where he met his future wife, Beverly, in the summer of 1961. They were married the following year on August 11, 1962. He served as a reservist in the U. S. Air Force during the Berlin and Cuban crises and was recalled to active duty during the Pueblo crisis. In 1965, Lud began his 30 year service with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. He began his career in Walla-Walla, WA. Then in 1973, his position took him and his family to Livorno, Italy. Lud worked in the Mediterranean division, later known as the Mid-East division. The U. S. Army Corps had Lud traveling the Middle East area extensively, spending much of his time in Saudi Arabia. In 1976, Lud served as a geologist at Mount Weather, Berryville, VA. In 1981, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. Finally, in 1995, Lud retired from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers. Lud then became interested in horticulture and obtained an associate’s degree in Landscape Design. He then worked at Virginia Tech in the extension office until 2000. Later in 2000, Lud and his wife, Beverly, retired to New Bern, NC.
He is survived by his wife Beverly, his three sons Paul, Michael and James and their spouses. He is also survived by his eighteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 22, 2021 at St. Paul Catholic Church. A rosary service will begin at 10:00am. The family will receive friends from 10:30am-11:30am. The funeral mass will begin at 11:30am and burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
