Mary was a graduate of Smith College in Northampton Massachusetts, and her interests included reading, riding her bike, playing golf and bridge, and spending time with her many friends. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Bern, the New Bern Golf and Country Club, the Richard Dobbs Spaight Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the New Bern Historical Society. She worked as a guide and hostess at Tryon Palace for more than 40 years.
Mary is predeceased by her husband of nearly 59 years, Robert Ralph Monte; and her parents, Myrtle Krieger Otto and Peter Waldo Otto. She is survived by her son, Peter Thomas Monte (Firth) of New Bern, and daughter, Louise Monte Williams (Dave) of Orlando, Florida; her grandchildren, Kate Monte, Anne Monte, Tom Monte (Becky), David Williams (Jessica), Mary-Slate Gobeille (Graham) and Robert Williams (Geneva); and great grandchildren, Grace and Adam Monte; Allison Williams; Magnolia Gobeille; and Hathaway, Thatcher, and Augusta Williams.
On a more personal level, our mother was known for routinely riding her bike in Trent Woods and delivering thoughtful gifts or food to the sick and bereaved. Regrettably, Mary’s funeral was private for only family members and care givers, but in her honor we ask that you do something nice for a neighbor or shut in, and smile under your mask.
