

He was born and raised in The Bronx, New York. He graduated from the High School of Printing in New York City and shortly thereafter he enlisted in the US Navy.
As a proud U.S. Navy Veteran he served aboard the USS Constellation (a plank owner) and the USS Randolph, which was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his military service, he had a thirty year career as a printing pressman for Beldar Printing Company in New Jersey. He then retired to New Bern, North Carolina. Michael lived a life grounded in love of family, service, and integrity. Family was always at the center of his life, and he cherished every moment shared with those he loved most.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Antonio Cortez and his five siblings.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Patricia Kathleen Cortez; his son, Michael Anthony Cortez Jr. (Col USA Ret) (Tracey Hedrick); his daughter, Amy Frances Heidt (Steven Kerstein); grandchildren, Korrine Cortez-Rolband, Kyle A. Cortez, and Ryan M. Heidt (Macy Holloman,Fiance); and great-grandchild, Lorelai Rolband.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Point Rd. Jacksonville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to a charity of one’s choice.
