Michael Murray Kaplan

Michael grew up in Syracuse, New York, and had a lifelong love of learning and education. He attended Georgia Tech University and Syracuse University, carrying his curiosity and love of knowledge throughout his life. He went on to build a long and successful career in pharmaceutical sales, a profession that took him across the country and internationally. Along the way, he formed many lasting friendships and cherished the colleagues and people he met throughout his travels.

Michael loved being on the road, especially long drives that gave him the opportunity to see new places and experience the country. His adventurous spirit began early in life; as a teenager, he was a boxer, reflecting the determination, strength, and independence that remained part of his character throughout his life.

Michael met the love of his life, Ingrid, in Pennsylvania. He adored his beautiful Indonesian-Dutch wife, and together they built a wonderful life. They eventually settled in New Bern, North Carolina, where they enjoyed their retirement and the many simple pleasures of life together. They spent time at the beach, fishing on the pond, golfing, visiting the gun range, and antiquing.

Avidly curious and always interested in the world around him, Michael was an enthusiastic reader who valued education throughout his life. He was also a passionate fisherman and loved his fishing boats, his collection of lures, and the many hours he spent on the lakes and waterways of the East Coast. Being outdoors brought him great happiness.

Michael was also an accomplished gardener. He took great pride in his home and yard and was known for having one of the best yards in the neighborhood. Gardening gave him another way to combine his patience, attention to detail, and appreciation for nature.

Above all, Michael was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and family man. He is survived by his wife, Ingrid Kaplan; his son, Mike Kaplan Jr., and Mike's wife, Andrea; his grandchildren Michael Z. and Ana; his great-grandchildren Kaeli and Sofia; his brother, Jack, and Jack's wife; Judy Kaplan and her children; and his stepson, Cliff. He was preceded in death by his parents, Naomi and Murray Kaplan.

Michael will be remembered for his intelligence, curiosity, adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, passion for fishing and reading, and especially for the love and devotion he gave to his family. His life was filled with travel, learning, friendship, nature, and cherished moments with the people he loved.

He leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will miss him deeply.
