He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Sadie Thayer, wife Betty Jo Thayer, daughter, Cynthia Lingerfelt, and brother Bert Thayer.
Nelson is survived by his daughter, Kim Thayer Hearne (Craig) of New Bern, NC, sister, Beverly Thayer Sisco (H.T.) of Tampa, FL, grandchildren; Tim Hearne, Branden Lingerfelt, Beth Lingerfelt Zeanah, and Josh Hearne.
Nelson proudly and faithfully served his country in the United States Army. He was also a active and faithful member of Croatan Church of Christ. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, especially furniture building. He donated many pieces of his work to the community.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00pm on Monday, January, 24, 2022, at Croatan Church of Christ 4115 Old Cherry Point Rd. New Bern, NC 28562.
