P. W. “Wade” Matthews Jr., 96, of Trent Woods went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at his home. Wade was born in Harnett City, North Carolina on December 11, 1929, to the late Pescott Wadesworth Matthews, Sr. and Zula Annis Matthews. Faithful, selfless, and beloved, Wade’s life was marked by steady devotion—to his family, his community, and the values he carried with quiet strength.
Wade was a Lillington High School graduate and went on to Campbell College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He later served our nation in the Air Force, proudly serving during the Korean Conflict—an experience that shaped his enduring sense of duty and honor.
Away from work and service, Wade found joy in simple, meaningful pursuits, especially golfing and hunting—pastimes that suited his patient nature and love of time well spent. He was also a devoted member of Broad Street Christian Church, where his faithful presence and servant’s heart were felt and appreciated.
Wade was a remarkable man—devoted and honorable—someone who carried a presence in any room he walked into. He was wise, and his impact on his family, friends, and community was astounding. He gave of himself freely, and in doing so, changed hearts and lives simply by being who he was. Wade will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory and continue in his legacy are his nephews, John E. Price (Teresa) of New Bern, Brian Pate of Tennessee, and Paul Hamilton (Jan) of Raleigh; and niece, Deborah Barker (John) of New Bern. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his beloved wife Marjorie Christine “Chris.”
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in his honor to Broad Street Christian Church, 802 Broad St, New Bern, NC 28560.
A Lakeside Chapel Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026 inside Greenleaf Memorial Park Cemetery, 900 River Rd., New Bern, NC 28560 at 3:00 pm with military honors. He will be entombed with his wife privately following the service.
Online condolences can be made to the family by visiting www.cottenfuneralhome.com. Cotten Funeral Home and Crematory is honored to serve the family and friends of Wade Matthews.
