Patricia Ann McCaffrey Berger passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the CarolinaEast Medical Center on January 14, 2019. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 23, 1934, to the late Edward Aloysius McCaffrey & Marie Carroll McCaffrey, she was the youngest of three close sisters. Pat was preceded in death by her sisters Joan Monahan & Mary Ellen Blondell. She grew up in Salisbury, Maryland and graduated from Wicomico High School and attended the Penninsula General Nursing program.
Pat married Robert Louis Berger in 1956 and they raised their daughters in Lutherville, Maryland, and Dover, Massachusetts before retiring to New Bern in 1989. She was an active member of the PTA, an avid Red Cross volunteer and served as a Commissioner on the Dover Parks & Recreation Board. She enjoyed her tennis & bridge groups, summers on Cape Cod, travels to Europe and trips to the NC Mountains and Myrtle Beach. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and was active in the Prison Ministry. Pat was beloved by those fortunate enough to call her wife, mom, Grammie, aunt & friend and she will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, daughters Courtenay Berger Carter of Trent Woods and Susan Berger Chrzanowski (David) of Severn, MD, and grandsons Gregory Berger Carter of Ft. Benning, Georgia, and Maxsim Berger Chrzanowski. She is also survived by many special nieces & nephews and their families.
Her family extends their heartfelt appreciation to those who helped care for her during the last two years of her life, especially the staff of the 4th floor at CarolinaEast. Her burial and graveside service will be held at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
