Patricia Cartee, known as Pat, mom, granny, GG, or Yay-Yay, was called back home July 28, 2025. Pat lived a full life; a life filled with travel, achievements, community, and more love than one could ever know. She lived with a heart for others up until her last days.
Originally from Pennsylvania, Pat moved to New Bern and quickly settled in. In her earlier time she served as the vice-president for the Craven Literacy Council for five years and was a member of the historical society where she volunteered for many ghost walks. Fall was her most favorite time of year after all. She also served as a member of the Ghent Neighborhood Association as a resident of Rhem Avenue.
Pat then went on to become the residence director of Sterling House Assisted Living for two years before accepting an offer with Steven D. Bell and becoming the executive director of Homeplace and McCarthy Court Assisted Living. Pat loved her employees and residents just like they were her own family. She loved her work and always wanted to give her all to her residents.
She was a lover of all animals and books. You could find her sitting on her front porch with her cat and a good book! She loved nature and the mountains. A cabin in Maine is all she needed and possibly a word search.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Leona O’Brinsky, and her two sons Patrick and Paul Kupec.
She leaves behind three grandchildren, Sueanne Kupec, Myk Lathrop, and Michael Leary, three great-grandchildren, Ariella Kupec, Charlotte Kupec, and Drake Sadler, her dearest friends Sally Miller, Bonnie, and Debbie Dreschler and her cat Jack.
Pat is now at peace and has been reunited with her “boys” as she would say. The family would like to personally thank all of her caregivers who were with her during this difficult time.
