Peter “Pete” Amerman Peacock, 96, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025 in New Bern, North Carolina. He was born on October 24, 1928 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey to Herbert and Louise (Amerman) Peacock.
Upon graduation from Andover (Phillips Academy) in 1946, Pete attended and received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Yale University in 1950. While at Yale, he was on the varsity crew team rowing in an eight-man racing shell. After graduation, Pete applied for flight school with the Air Force but while waiting, worked for the DuPont Company in Waynesboro, Virginia. DuPont changed Pete’s life when they offered him a position in Terre Haute, Indiana to start up a heavy water reactor plant. He would later work at the DuPont Savannah River Plant near Aiken, South Carolina where he became one of the first licensed nuclear engineers in the country. This was the height of the Cold War and Pete played a significant role in keeping the United States safe. He finished his 37-year career with Dupont in their textile fibers division where he started up nylon plants in Martinsville, Virginia and Camden, South Carolina. After retiring from DuPont, Pete moved to Beaufort, South Carolina where he lived with his wife Beverly for over 25 years. Pete enjoyed woodworking, golfing, boating, rowing, wind surfing, bicycling, scuba diving and traveling in his motorhome.
Pete was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by sons: Bradley Peacock (Linda) and Jeffrey Peacock (Brenda); grandchildren: Tyler Peacock (Aileen), Meredith Liang (Andy) and Lauren Peacock; stepsons: Tatum Boulware Jr. (Margaret) and Nathan Boulware (Pam); step grandchildren: Anna Pelletier (Robbie), Lauren Pratt (Christian), Tatum Boulware III, Katie Boulware Davis (Ryan) and Daniel Boulware (Katie) and five step great-grandchildren.
