Ralph Thompson Riggs, affectionately known as “Papa” (pronounced “paw paw”), passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in Morehead City, North Carolina, at the age of 85. A longtime resident of Newport, North Carolina, Ralph will be remembered for his quick wit, generous spirit, many talents, and deep devotion to his family.
Born on December 5, 1940, in Morehead City. Ralph was the son of Ralph Willard Riggs and Annie Mae Ipock. He earned his high school diploma, served his country in the United States Army, and later worked in civil service. Throughout his life, he made his home in New Bern and Newport, building a legacy rooted in hard work, creativity, and family.
Ralph was truly a jack of all trades. His many interests and talents included fishing, restoring automobiles, woodworking, carpentry, photography, making home videos, and playing the guitar. He also earned a brown belt in karate, reflecting his dedication to developing new skills and challenging himself.
Those who knew Ralph will fondly remember his clever sense of humor and his remarkable ability to tell a joke on the spot. His quick wit could lighten any room and make those around him feel comfortable and at ease. An enthusiastic Elvis Presley fan, Ralph would occasionally surprise family and friends with an impromptu impersonation of Elvis, complete with his familiar catchphrase, “Thank ya’. Thank ya’, very much.” These playful moments were just one of the many ways he brought laughter and joy to those around him.
Ralph also understood the importance of preserving memories. Through his photography and home videos, he lovingly documented family gatherings, holidays, and vacations, creating a treasured collection of moments that will continue to connect generations. His ability to capture these special occasions ensured that the family's history would live on through the faces, voices, and memories of those he loved.
Above all, Ralph was a devoted family man. He shared a deep and enduring love with his beloved wife, Barbara Anne Morris Riggs, whom he married on July 30, 1959. Even after her passing in 2001, his love for Barbara remained unmistakable. Perhaps the most touching testament to their bond was his only tattoo: the initials “BM” surrounded by a heart on his forearm. It was a simple yet lasting symbol of a love that remained with him throughout his life.
Ralph's legacy lives on through the children and grandchildren who inherited his natural talents, resourcefulness, humor, and appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Whether working with his hands, sharing a joke, playing music, or recording a family memory, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Ralph is survived by his daughters, Pamela Riggs Olsson and Carlotta Riggs Fox; his grandchildren, Chris Olsson, James Fox, Timothy Olsson, and Justin Fox; his great-grandchildren, Connor Olsson, Cooper Olsson, Maddie Olsson, Aaliyah Fox, and Riley Fox; and his brother, Gary “Donnie” Riggs. He also leaves behind extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Morris Riggs, in 2001, and his siblings Kenneth Rhue, Lajuana Marshall, and Coretta Brooks.
Though Ralph's presence will be deeply missed, the laughter he inspired, the skills he passed down, the memories he captured, and the love he shared will remain a lasting part of his family's story. His life was a testament to the importance of family, a good sense of humor, and the value of leaving something meaningful behind for those who follow.
The family will receive friends on Monday October 12, 2026 from 1:30-2:30 pm at Cotten Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 3 pm at the pavilion in Greenleaf Memorial Park in New Bern.
Ralph will be forever loved, fondly remembered, and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him family, friend, and “Papa.”
