OBITUARY

Richard George Ewing

August 22, 1950 – January 1, 2022
Obituary of Richard George Ewing
IN THE CARE OF

Cotten Funeral Home

Richard George Ewing, age 71, loving father of four, grandfather of ten, and adoring husband to his loving wife Linda, passed away at 3:12pm New Year’s day after his beautiful heart succumbed to a battle with heart failure. His wife and two sons were there by his side to shower him with love and ease his departure.

Born on August 22, 1950, Richard grew up in the North Georgia mountains and Atlanta under the loving care of his mother Alma. After graduating high school, he briefly attended Georgia Tech before deciding to enlist in the United States Navy as an electrical repairman. He volunteered for submarine service and had the honor of sailing on the USS Gato (SSN-615), a nuclear submarine known as the “Goal Keeper” or the “Black Cat”. As a man who stood 6’4” in height, it was quite an artform to traverse the narrow corridors of the sub and sleep on its short bunks. When Richard married his first wife Cheryl, he transitioned to a Navy instructor position and welcomed the arrival of his first born son Richard Scott. Richard served his country honorably from 1969 to 1978 achieving the rank of Petty Officer First Class.

Richard and Cheryl settled in Windsor, Connecticut and welcomed their second born son Christopher. Richard completed his degree in Electrical Engineering attending both the University of Hartford and Charter Oak State College. He took a position with Northeast Utilities at the Millstone Nuclear Power station where he worked for 18 years while raising his children. He loved the outdoors and cherished the memories he made with his sons exploring the wilderness together. His marriage to Cheryl came to an end. The universe had other plans.

On a chance business trip to the San Onofre Power Plant, he found himself on an airplane flight next to Miss Linda Lee of San Clemente, California. Cupid went in for the kill shot and their fate was sealed. Richard moved to California and began a new career working at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. He married Linda February 6, 1999 and gained two step-daughters, Solana and Bree. They built a love story for the ages as best friends and soulmates traveling, biking, rowing, and stand-up paddle boarding with their cherished friends, and watching their beloved family grow.

In February of 2018, Linda and Richard officially retired and moved to New Bern, North Carolina to pursue their dream of establishing a family home that could host all of their children and grandchildren. They settled on Brices Creek with a loving community of “River Rats” to grow young with. They became members of the New Bern Yacht Club as Richard proudly became captain of his very own Cobia 240cc that he sailed with grandbabies, his loving wife and their little Havanese fur babies Amstel and Paloma.

He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years Linda, his son Richard Scott and his wife Nicki, his son Chris and his wife Laura, his step-daughter Bree and her husband Paul, his step-daughter Solana, Aleta Ortiz whom he loved like a daughter, his mother Alma, his Aunt Gladys and Uncle Randy, his Uncle Bert and Aunt Betty, his siblings Mary and Charles, his grandchildren: Catie, Mathew, Amelia, Leila, Ellis, Sean, Ruby, Mabel, Paul, and Ava; and his dogs Amstel and Paloma. He is also remembered and loved by extended family and friends too numerous to mention.
