IN THE CARE OF

Cotten Funeral Home

Richard Irving Hallberg, 88, of New Bern, North Carolina passed away on Friday, September 23, 2022. Richard was born on August 26, 1934 in Duluth, MN to Irving Leonard Hallberg and Irene Hallberg.

Richard I. Hallberg is survived by his children, Dean L. Hallberg of Raleigh, N.C., preceded in death by Debra Hallberg and Colette Hallberg, Cynthia L. Hallberg (Brian Nelson) of Powhatan, VA, Patricia H. Marlette of New Bern NC, and Andrew A. Hallberg (Lucy) of Sioux Falls, SD, as well as thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren who brought him great joy. Richard is predeceased by his wife Joanne Hallberg and his grandson Matthew Tarasoff.

Richard spent most of his career in the Foreign Service where he and his wife Joanne, along with their children, travelled around the world to several embassy assignments. He was an amateur radio enthusiast throughout his life and passed along this legacy to his children and grandchildren. Richard also loved to sail and often remarked that spending time near the water made him feel content and at peace. Most of all, he loved his family and many friends.

His family remembers him as humble, caring, warm, genuine, levelheaded, and loving. He was known for his great story telling and jokes, his wisdom, his boating knowledge, his magical manner, his deep faith in Christ, his commitment to helping others, and his humorous nicknames for those he loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to Christ Episcopal Church of New Bern, 320 Pollock Street, New Bern, NC 28560.

A private family funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Christ Episcopal Church of New Bern. Interment to follow in the church cemetery. Online condolences can be made to www.cottenfuneralhome.com.
