He was born in Iowa City, Iowa in 1941. He is a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the St. Piux X Catholic Church in Greensboro, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon K. Strickland; his sons, Timothy Joseph Strickland of Independence, MO and Richard Lee Strickland, Jr. of New Bern, NC; his daughters Shielah Jean Strickland of Little Rock, AK and Dyanna Kay Strickland of Dallas, TX; a brother, William Hugh Strickland; Betty Jo Strickland-Morrissey and DeLoma Mae Strickland-Gunderson; six grandchildren Richard Lee Strickland, III, Morgan Lynn Hale Thomson, Tymothy David Howard,
Aaron Richard Davis, Eric David Strickland, and Kyle James Kirkschopher; four great-grandchildren Annabella Davis, Kyleigh Boice, Chloe Boice and Emma Strickland.
