Robert Ellsworth Maners, 93, of New Bern, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at his home on October 3, 2026. He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful servant of God, and a kind and generous friend to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Robert married the love of his life, Maxine Garner, in 1953, beginning a marriage that would span 68 wonderful years. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, hard work, and service to others. Robert proudly served his country during the Korean War and, following his military service, dedicated 30 years of his career to the Civil Service at MCAS Cherry Point. He took great pride in his work and retired at the age of 55 as a Department Head.
His faith was an important and lasting part of Robert’s life. He was an active and dedicated member of his church, where he faithfully served as a Deacon and Sunday School Director and Teacher. He loved sharing his faith and encouraging others, and his commitment to his church family was a reflection of the compassion and generosity that defined his life.
Robert found great joy in the simple things. He loved woodworking, traveling, and, most of all, spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a man who never hesitated to lend a helping hand. Whether a friend needed assistance, a neighbor needed something done, or someone simply needed a listening ear, Robert was there. His willingness to help others, his warm smile, and his genuine kindness touched countless lives. He was deeply loved and respected by his family, friends, neighbors, and everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Robert is survived by his children, Cheryl and husband Leon Robbins and Doug and wife Pat Maners; his grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband Cam Stratton and Tori and husband John Gritton; and his dear friend, Winnie Fussell. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, service, and devotion to family that will continue through the generations.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maxine Garner Maners, and his siblings, Roddy Maners, Davie M. Maners, and Mona E. Goodwin.
A Celebration of Robert’s Life will be held at the Greenleaf Memorial Park Pavilion (900 River Road, New Bern) at 11 am on Thursday October 8, 2026, where family and friends will gather to remember and honor a life well lived. Robert’s family invites all who knew and loved him to join them in celebrating the wonderful man he was and the many lives he touched.
