He is well known in journalism circles around NC for his career of excellent reporting, investigative journalism, and as a newspaper editor. After retiring from journalism Bob taught and worked in masonry. In addition to work, Bob enjoyed sailing, fishing, and working on “big adventures” with his three grandchildren. They enjoyed many activities together including small engine repair and building projects.
Thankful for his life and continuing his memory are his grandchildren Jesse Robert Stephens, Ross Michael Stephens and John Clifford Stephens Jr and daughter in law Carrie Stephens Mayo and her husband Christopher Mayo. Additionally, his sister Linda Gray Stephens, his niece Carla Alexander and many nieces and nephews, and his ex-wife Judith Hunter.
In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his brothers, John Lee, Henry Carl, Ernest Rodney and Timothy Mark and his sons John Clifford Stephens Sr. and Robert Stephens, Jr.
The family would like to thank his wonderful faithful nurse Shiane, his hospice team and his medical providers.
