His children will always remember his gentle nature, tenacious work ethic, and how deeply he loved their mother. All the times spent with him in his garage or on the farm are joyful memories of learning by his side. His grandchildren will remember him for his quick smile, plaid shirt, tall John Deere hat, and Ray-Ban sunglasses. They have wonderful recollections of him teaching them how mechanical things work, the proper way to mow a lawn, and how he would quickly slip a twenty into their hands. Rodney served his neighbors on Circle Drive with generosity, ever willing to share his talents of being able to “fix anything” with all. His family is exceedingly proud to call him their own. His character, compassion, and commitment to Jesus were unmatched.
Rodney is survived by his daughter, Donna: his son, Rod & wife Larkin: his grandchildren, Mark Whitfield, Joshua Whitfield (Mackenzie), Parker, Noah, Libby, and Jolie Hawkins: his sisters and brothers-in-law, Patsy Hawkins, George Waters (Inez), Barbara Daniels (Garley), Charles Waters (Mary Alice), Glenda Bell, Mike Waters (Sheryl), and Annette Waters. He has numerous aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews which he greatly loved, as well as his caregiver, Becca Phillips, who was his dear companion.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Jean, parents, Molton and Nina Hawkins, and his brother, Burney Hawkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Religious Community Services (RCS) of New Bern or a charity of your choice.
