Born in Smithfield, North Carolina, Roney was the beloved son of the late V.J. and Ann Underwood. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Following his military service, he dedicated 26 years of service to Frito-Lay before retiring.
Roney embraced life with enthusiasm and an adventurous spirit. One of his lifelong dreams was to fly, and he fulfilled that dream by earning his hang glider certification and purchasing an ultralight aircraft. He also enjoyed the unforgettable experience of flying as a passenger in exhibition aircraft during several airshows.
He enjoyed spending time on the golf course, playing cards with friends, and was an accomplished pool player. In his younger years, Roney loved riding motorcycles and racing go-karts. He was also a devoted Corvette enthusiast, proudly owning three Corvettes that earned numerous trophies at car shows.
Roney is survived by his stepson, Brad Lee and wife, Kelly, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; his grandson, Brailey Lee of Wilmington, North Carolina; his sister, Kathy Hilburn and husband, Roger, of Loris, South Carolina; and his brother, David Underwood and wife, Dianne, of Smithfield, North Carolina. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom loved him dearly.
In addition to his parents, Roney was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Shapou Lee Underwood.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in imagining Ron with the most beautiful and glorious set of wings and that familiar big smile as he experienced complete freedom from the body that had endured so much for so many years. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives, we take solace in knowing that our loss is Heaven's gain.
Fly high, Ron. You will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
