Ruth Desjardins Izzo, 76, of New Bern, North Carolina passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at her residence in Fairfield Harbor. Ruth was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on August 3, 1946, to Paul and Dorothy Desjardins. She graduated from Dunellen High School in 1965 and married Anthony Michael Izzo in 1966. They resided in New Jersey then relocated to Garner, NC in 1979. They enjoyed leisure time at their vacation property on Dawson Creek and eventually settled nearby in New Bern, NC in 1996.
Ruth’s main source of enjoyment was her family. She looked forward to spending time with all of them and the best memories are from the times when they could all get together whether in New Bern or at the beach. A festive atmosphere was always guaranteed especially when the Macerinos were in town! The food, wine, laughter, and love always flowed freely.
She and Tony also enjoyed camping, although for several decades now it would be better described as “glamping” (in a nice RV at campgrounds with plenty of amenities). Family was always encouraged to visit or stay. Cherrystone Campground on the Eastern shore of Virginia was a favorite destination, and the family has many cherished memories of their time with Mom/Mema there. The family will continue to cherish her memory and make many more with Dad/Pop Pop at Goose Creek RV resort in Newport.
Ruth was a constant source of support for her children and grandchildren, and the joy she received from being their Mema was undeniable. They could count on her to be present at birthday parties, sporting events, dance recitals, and graduations; she was everyone’s biggest fan!
She will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 56 years, Anthony "Tony" Izzo, daughter Kimberly (Art) Hough of Alliance, sons, Mark Izzo of Morrisville and Christopher (Tina) Izzo of Wendell; 7 beloved grandchildren, Brennon (Marissa) Hough, Connor (Martha) Hough, Jared Izzo, Kamryn Hough, Elizabeth Izzo, Amelia Izzo and Emma Izzo, 3 great grandchildren: Jaxon, Mia, and Waylon as well as a very special cousin who was more like her sister, Donna (Tony) Macerino.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant (upstairs), 100 Pollock Street, New Bern, NC 28560. Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Ruth Izzo.
