During her younger years, she was a waitress at Bynum’s Drug Store and Kress Store. Soon, she landed a job at the Cherry Point Exchange where she met the love of her life, a young marine by the name of James Gray. She was quite a looker, so James swept her off her feet, married her, and enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. She kept the home fires burning with her cooking and always did her house work as if she was expecting Jesus to visit. We will miss you Mama, and by God’s grace we will all see you again.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Gray and two daughters, Susan Cox and Elizabeth Adams.
She is survived by three children, Barbara Ames (Larry), George Gray (Amber), and James Gray, Jr. (Regina), all of New Bern; one brother, Vernon Riggs of Belgrade; thirteen grandchildren; and seventeen great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Cotten Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. at Greenleaf Memorial Park.
Special thanks to Dr. Degraw, the caring staff of Riverpoint Crest Rehabilitation and Rest Home, and the wonderful staff at CarolinaEast Medical Center.
Arrangements entrusted to Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
