Willard David Hess, 90. of New Bern, North Carolina passed away at his home on Saturday, August 9, 2025 with his wife by his side. Willard was born at home in Penns Grove, New Jersey on August 12,1934 to the late Willard R. Hess and Jilda Christina Spinelli Hess.

He enjoyed music his entire life, played piano, organ, accordion and drums. Sang with 5 different choirs during his younger years, barbershop quartet later in life. His sanctuary was being on a boat, working on a boat, building boats or just cruising. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Was a field cook for the artillery troops.

Spent most of his life doing restoration work on historic houses in the S. Jersey area. Was his own man and totally in control of his own destiny. Did furniture restoration and repurposing for over 60 years. Proud of his woodworking skills.

He was a strong and stoic soul concerning his fight with cancer. However, he didn't win the last round.

Thankful for his life and continuing in his memory are his beloved wife of 68 years Ethel Lee Dangler Hess, his daughter Claire H. Davis, his grandchildren: Jason W. Hess, Amber E. Long Forsman, Noah D. Hess, Nathan M Long. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his son Lance M Hess, his sister Alice B Hess Rothwell.

The family wishes to acknowledge the care and love given to Willard by Dr. Richard Gorman and his wonderful staff of nurses during his long fight with cancer, Dr. Michael Fugimagari for taking care of his other health issues with such dedication. Though he was not in the care of hospice very long, thank you to a dedicated group of people that truly care for their charges.
