William Benjamin Anderson V, affectionately known as “Bill,” passed away at the age of 83 on Sunday, July 12, 2026, in New Bern, North Carolina, following a courageous five-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Born on April 14, 1943, in Onley, Virginia, Bill was the son of William Benjamin Anderson IV and Dorothy Stengle Anderson, and he grew up alongside his brother, Robert Kerry Anderson. After high school, Bill attended East Carolina University, where he met the love of his life, Katherine Turner ("Kathy").
Bill and Kathy were married on August 10, 1968, at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern, North Carolina. That same year, he joined the Coast Guard Reserve, where he proudly served for seven years. Bill went on to complete his studies, graduating from ECU with a Bachelor of Arts in 1971. Bill and Kathy lived together in Greenville, North Carolina, and Fairfax, Virginia, before making New Bern their permanent home in 1975.
Professionally, Bill began his career working in cartography for the federal government. He later transitioned to the state level, eventually ending his career with the North Carolina Department of Revenue.
Bill was a warm and outgoing man who truly "never met a stranger," finding great joy in chatting with anyone and everyone. He had a wonderful and unique blend of interests, including a deep love for history, trains, reading maps, boating, flashlights, and crisp fall weather. He was an avid supporter of ECU Pirates athletics, following their basketball and baseball teams closely, and was a passionate fanatic for ECU football. A faithful member of his community, Bill also dedicated 45 years as an usher at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Katherine Turner Anderson, of New Bern, North Carolina. Bill’s legacy lives on through his loving children: William Benjamin Anderson VI and his wife, Natalie Odean Anderson; Thomas McLean Anderson; and Katherine Anderson Moura and her husband, Alexander Santos Moura. He was also a proud grandfather to three grandsons: Zachary William Lollar, Turner Alexander Moura, and William River Moura. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Kerry Anderson and his wife Peggy Harrison Anderson, and will be fondly remembered by his six nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Bill’s life will be held on Friday, July 24th, at 11:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church in New Bern, North Carolina. A reception will follow the service at the church. Interment will take place at Christ Episcopal Church.
