

William was the devoted husband of Barbara Gehlert for 72 wonderful years. Together, they created a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. He is survived by his son, Donald Gehlert (Sue) of Boulder, Colorado; two daughters, Carol Gehlert of New Bern and Lisa Legge (George) of Bluffton, South Carolina; and four beloved grandsons, Matt, Michael, Connor, and Aidan.
An accomplished artist and a proud member of the Craven County Arts Council, William’s creativity enriched the lives of many. He had a profound appreciation for nature and spent countless hours tending to his garden, where his passion for beauty flourished. William also enjoyed playing tennis and golf, sharing his enthusiasm for these sports with friends and family. One of his most memorable adventures was a six-month biking journey across Europe with Barbara, an experience they treasured and often reminisced about. William’s zest for life and love for exploration inspired those around him.
William leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and adventure. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, and the countless ways he touched the hearts of others.
