Bobbye Del Haynes passed away peacefully on January 29th at the age of 93. She spent her final days surrounded by the people she loved most. She was a beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother three times over! She was married to the love of her life, Herb Haynes, for 64 years before his passing four years prior.
Bobbye was born in 1930, in the small ranching community of Doole, TX to “Jack” and Nora Johnson. During WWII, the family moved to San Antonio, TX, and there, as a teenager, Bobbye became a big sister twice over to Bettye and Barbara Johnson. In young adulthood, Bobbye worked for the United States Air Force Security Service as a member of the cryptomaterial team. It was there where she learned how to play Hearts, a game she would play for years to come with with her nephews and great grand-daughters. She had a reputation as a ruthless cardplayer disguised as a sweet grandma.
In the spring of 1954, Bobbye and Herb were introduced at church. He wrote her a letter asking her on a date and less than a year later they were married, on February 19th, 1955. One year later, they welcomed their daughter, Denise. Job relocations took this young family to Brownsville, TX for 10 years before they eventually settled in El Paso, TX. Bobbye cared for Denise and volunteered at the church. She began teaching, first as a 4th grade substitute and then as a full time kindergarten teacher at a small private Christian school. Over the next four decades, Bobbye would influence hundreds of children, teaching them about Jesus’ love for them - including their new granddaughter, Nicole.
For almost 40 years, Herb and Bobbye built a beautiful life together in El Paso serving their local community, their church, and their family. In 2004, the draw to be closer to family had them on the move to New Braunfels, TX. There, Herb and Bobbye established a new community at New Braunfels Church of Christ. Bobbye continued to follow her calling by teaching children’s Bible class. Their home in New Braunfels was filled with the sounds of young family life as their granddaughter and her husband, Scott, brought Bobbye’s two great-granddaughters, Henley and Sloane, to visit often. The world stopped when they came to visit. Bobbye taught them how to play 42, Hearts and countless other games. Core memories were made at “Nonnie and Papa’s” house climbing trees, taking trips to ride the train, building forts and watching movies. Bobbye never stopped teaching; it was her great joy to teach her great-granddaughters the same Bible stories and songs she had taught so many other children over the years.
In 2019, Bobbye’s life-long love passed away. It was heartbreaking for her and her family, but she continued to turn to the Lord and her community for strength. Just a month later, Bobbye learned that she would welcome another great-grandbaby in the Fall of 2020. And in what could have only been God’s provision, Bobbye’s third great granddaughter, Remi Faith, was born on September 30th, 2020 - Bobbye’s 90th birthday!
In 2022, Bobbye made her final move to Austin, TX so she could be close to her daughter and granddaughter. While Austin was never really her home, she handled the move with grace and humility. She spent her final two years spending time with her family: still playing 42 with her great-granddaughters and still influencing the lives of those around her with her love and kindness.
Bobbye was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Herb Haynes; her parents, “Jack” and Nora Johnson; and brother in-law, Mac Turner. Bobbye is survived by her daughter, Denise Haynes; her granddaughter, Nikki Magee and her husband Scott Magee; her three great-granddaughters, Henley, Sloane and Remi Magee; and her two sisters, Barbara Turner and Bettye Johnson. She was fortunate to have loved many nieces and nephews: Richard Oehler, Brad and Amy Oehler, John and Carol Haynes and Lynda and Tom Clements, along with many great nieces and nephews as well as many friends and neighbors.
Bobbye’s family wishes to thank the caregivers who cared for her with so much love and dignity over the last few years. Words cannot express our gratitude to Melanie, Diane, Miguel, Rick, Hope, Niecha, Jennifer, Jadyn, Ellie, Shawna, Vivian, Teresa, Vanessa, Traci, Shoni, and Braeley. You loved and cared for her well and she loved each one of you.
Services celebrating Bobbye’s life will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024 at her church home of New Braunfels Church of Christ. The family will receive friends for a visitation from 10:00 AM until services begin at 11:00 PM. Please dress for a celebration filled with color - Bobbye was always dressed to impress in color!
