Tom was born in Fairmont, West Virginia on June 28, 1918. He joined the Navy after high school in 1940 and proudly served in World War II. He was stationed on the heavy cruiser USS Vincennes in the Pacific and on Midway Island. Tom was Sr. Chief of Aviation until the end of the War and was awarded numerous citations and commendations for his service. He was also a licensed pilot and licensed aircraft and engine mechanic. After the war Tom went on to work for General Motors, TWA and Braniff Airlines and in 1981 retired from Braniff. After retiring, he and Euna moved from Dallas to New Braunfels where he spent the remaining 31 years of his life. While living in New Braunfels though he was technically “retired” he was far from inactive. He worked as a small engine mechanic and breathed life back into many a lawn mower. About eight years ago Tom lost his eyesight to Macular Degeneration. For many, this would be cause to give up and become sedentary but it served to be only a small blip in his timeline. After becoming blind he still worked on lawn mowers by enlisting the help of family and neighbors to be his “eyes” and also did many small carpentry projects using power tools and such until even the week of his passing. He was generous in giving his time and resources to anyone with a need. All of the things he made, toy boxes, stools, tables, etc. were all given away lovingly to each recipient. Tom was also a born teacher and loved teaching anyone who would listen about aviation, mechanics, carpentry and about life in general. Tom was very beloved by his family, friends and neighbors. He was even seen the very morning before being hospitalized walking in the neighborhood with his walker picking up all of the neighbors’ trashcans and walking them to their garages. Tom was a man of great character, always a patriot and military man and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
