Charles Stewart Holt was born in New Mexico and spent most of his life in Washington state before eventually settling in Texas. On Saturday, September 6th 2025, he left us, no doubt still muttering about something that annoyed him on the way out.
Charlie lived a big life. He served in the Marines, worked as a lumberjack in the Washington mountains for nearly 20 years, and could usually be found fixing up cars, patching the house, or dragging one of the boys out out fishing or kayaking. He wasn’t much for hobbies, unless you count drinking beer, telling tall tales, and swearing at broken machinery.
He was stern, stubborn, and sometimes outright mean, but he was also loyal to his family. He loved my mom, Stephanie, and together they raised the four of us, Rae Beth, Henry, Harrison, and Sampson. He made sure we knew the value of hard work, the importance of showing up, and how to spot when a story was absolute nonsense… though it took us years to figure that one out, since he was a master at spinning “facts” that sounded just believable enough.
Some of our best memories are with him in the mountains or on the water kayaking & fishing. He wasn’t perfect, but he was ours. And we’ll remember him for the laughter, the hard work, the tall tales, and the love he showed in his own gruff way.
Charles leaves behind his wife Stephanie, his children Rae Beth, Henry, Harrison, and Sampson, and countless stories we’ll be retelling for years.
