Connie Kim (Hillard) Lewallen passed away on the night of Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the age of 68 in the presence of her family at her home in New Braunfels. Having bravely endured treatment for the better part of 14 years–so strong was her desire to remain present to her friends, family, and loved ones–she finally succumbed to cancer.
Kim, as she has been known since childhood, lived a rich life focused on her faith, family, friends, and her work as a speech therapist. She was born on October 3, 1956, in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, to Jordan Buie Hillard and Bamma (Howell) Hillard. While attending Southwest Texas State University and Hill Country Church, she met her future husband of 46 years, James Lee Lewallen. They married in 1979, and she graduated with her master’s degree in Speech and Language Pathology in 1980. She worked as a speech therapist in schools, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes throughout much of her adult life, the longest stretches being in the Longview, San Marcos, and San Antonio areas. She retired from San Antonio’s North East Independent School District in 2017.
Even while undergoing aggressive treatment, Kim enjoyed her life as fully as she could, taking international trips to France and Israel, and spending time with her kids and grandkids in Richardson, TX and Tulsa, OK. She enjoyed Bible studies, road trips, lunches with friends, and canasta games with a group of women from her neighborhood. A lifelong believer, she attended church as often as her health would allow, and when she was unable to attend, she watched services online. She spent time each day in prayer, usually while sitting on her back porch enjoying the beautiful trees and flowers of her backyard.
Kim is survived by her parents; her husband; her brother, Kenneth; her son, Jason, and his wife, Charity; her daughter, Amber, and her husband, Brennan; and her two grandsons, Dominic and Michael.
A visitation will be held at Zoeller Funeral Home (615 Landa St., New Braunfels, TX 78130) on Thursday, July 10, from 5-7pm. A funeral service will be held at Freedom Fellowship (410 Oak Run Pt., New Braunfels, TX 78132) on Friday, July 11, at 11am, with a burial service following at 2pm at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park (2951 S State Highway 46, New Braunfels, TX 78130).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Kim’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
