““The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord.” Psalms 37:23

David Edward Owens Sr. won his final fight in the afternoon of September 21st after a long and valiant struggle. He went to his well-deserved rest after having been surrounded by his extensive family in his final months. In his last moments he was listening to some of his children singing- few are they who could be so blessed.

What a life to have lived, and such lessons to have imparted to all who were lucky to have known him, loved him, and been loved by him. Dave was born December 13th 1927, the 2nd youngest of 7 siblings. He learned the lessons of perseverance and dedication early in his life; lessons that served him well throughout his days. After joining the Air Force he was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio. It was there that he was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Mary, at a USO dance; and they danced happily through the next 63 years together after marrying on February 25th, 1950.

In his life the term “active” would be an understatement. After long years of being a successful salesman, Dave started D&M Services right here in New Braunfels. It is a legacy he was proud of, and many of his children and grandchildren continue that legacy to this day. Being a tireless and successful businessman would never have been enough for Dave though. On top of his dedication to his family and the company he started, Dave was also dedicated to civic activities and giving back to his community. He was an active participant (and often leader) of the many organizations he was a member of: the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, Little League, Boy Scouts of America, Wurstfest Association, Fair Association, Carousel Dance Club, Texas State Guard and many others. His legacy of service will never be forgotten.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, 6 siblings, infant daughter Linda Kathryn, and his beloved grandson Craig. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary, and his seven children: David Jr. (wife Cyndy), Michael (wife Susan), Margaret (husband Don), Jimmy (wife Beth), Kathy (husband Don), Bobby (wife Sandra) and John (wife Tracy). He is also survived by his 35 grandchildren, their spouses, and 36 great-grandchildren. As if seventy eight direct descendants were not enough, innumerable are those who were lucky enough to have called him their friend. Dave filled his life with people, laughter, and service; and we all thank him for his life and for his lessons. We are all so very thankful for the years we have had with him.

We’d like to thank the staffs of Christus Santa Rosa, Eden Hill, and Hope Hospice for their service to our patriarch. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be given to Hope Hospice New Braunfels or the charity of one’s choice.

are etched in our hearts and minds forever. Thank you dad for everything and for being the "rock" upon which our family foundation was built upon. You will never be far away as you are in my heart always, I love you, your son Bobby

Sending all of our love and prayers for peace and comfort to each of you. We wish we could be there for Uncle Dave's final farewell. He will certainly be missed. We always looked forward to their visit to our place in Ohio each year and it was sad when they could no longer make that journey. We hope to see all of you again real soon.
