Deena Liles of New Braunfels went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, April 23, 2017 after an extended illness. Deena was born on October 23, 1968 in Jacksonville, Florida to Dr. James Robert Ray and Nancy Hudnall Ray. Her father was a US Navy flight surgeon when Deena was born and soon after her birth, the family moved to their home state of New Mexico and settled in Hobbs where Deena and her brother Bradley Ray were raised.
As a young girl, Deena was an accomplished gymnast and enjoyed scuba diving and snow skiing. She made many dear friends in Hobbs that she always kept close. She graduated magna cum laude from Baylor University in 1990. For a brief time after college, Deena was a CPA in both public and private accounting, but soon decided to follow her father’s footsteps into the medical profession.
While in medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, Deena met her husband, Louis and they were married in San Antonio on December 2, 2000. The family moved to New Braunfels in 2007 and are members of Oakwood Baptist Church. At the time of her death, Dr. Liles was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and served as the Director of OB Anesthesia with the University Health System.
Known for her leadership and compassion, Deena was a role model for her colleagues and spent many hours of personal time counseling others who were dealing with serious medical issues in their families.
The world has lost a consummate sports fan whose favorite pastime was cheering for her three sons as they played baseball and basketball.
She is preceded in death by her loving parents. Survivors in New Braunfels include her husband, Louis Liles and sons, Luke, Hayden and Ian; stepmother, Joann Ray and brother, Bradley Ray. Surviving stepchildren, Jason Liles, Todd Liles, Lisa Linden, Lindsay Griffin, and Leslie Groves; 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandson, all reside in Oklahoma City.
