Derek Harold Gray

Derek is survived by his Mother Melissa Gray, his Father John Gray (Lisa), his grandparents, Bob Gray (Nancy), Martha Borchardt (Harold), his sisters, Megan Gray, Breanna Beavers (Tristin), Ashley Gray, and his son Beckett Thoma, as well as nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He is preceded in death by his sister Brittany Gray.

Derek’s life was marked by compassion, quiet strength, and an extraordinary ability to connect with people—young and old. He lived with a servant’s heart and an unwavering loyalty that left an impression on everyone he met. That was one of his greatest gift’s.

To know Derek was to know love without judgment. He had a gentle presence and a smile that could light up a room. Whether through his words, his music, or just the way he listened, Derek had a rare gift for making others feel seen, heard, and deeply understood. He brought warmth, light, and authenticity into every space he entered.

Music was one of Derek’s greatest passions. He wrote his own songs, often using music to connect with others and bring people together. He found joy in jam sessions, open mics, and spontaneous moments of musical magic that often-turned strangers into friends. In the New Braunfels community, Derek was known not only as a talented musician, but also as someone who inspired connection through the universal language of song.

Beyond music, Derek cherished the simple things in life—being outdoors, going on adventures, camping, spending time with his family and friends, loving on kids and animals, especially his German Sheperd Layla, and making memories that mattered. He made it his mission to show up for people, in big ways and small. He made the world a better place—one song, one smile, one hug, one act of kindness at a time. Derek was deeply loved by his community, and that love was a reflection of the way he loved others: fully, and without condition. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy—of love, connection, and kindness—will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
