He leaves his beloved wife of 54 years, Sharon (Child) Williams; his children Dr. Jeffrey Williams, Dr. James Williams (Carrie), and Nicole Shon (Marek); his brother James Williams (Ana Lou); his sister Bonnie Brown; and 9 beautiful grandchildren.
Born and raised in Ogden, Utah, Doug dedicated his heart to Texas, and retired on a little plot of land he considered ‘God’s country.’
In his early years, Doug led an adventurous life one could only compare to a period novel of the 50s. In an attempt to ‘straighten up,’ Doug pursued a career as a professional bull rider in the RCA rodeo circuit where he travelled the west and sustained some success accompanied by some magnificent tumbles.
After being drafted to the Army, Doug was taught, under resistance, the discipline and self-confidence that would shape the rest of his life. Honorably discharged as a sergeant E-6, he declined advancement to officer school and pursued a career in academics. He obtained his Masters degree from New Mexico State University and pursued and obtained his doctorate degree from Louisiana State University. His academic achievements led to an illustrious career in teaching at West Texas State University and California State University, Fresno, where he retired professor emeritus in 2001.
Dr. Williams loved caring for his property and animals. His best days were defined surrounded by his family, roping, mending fences, and driving his mule with his Jack Russell Terrier, Darby in tow. He influenced those around him to achieve their dreams through undeterred support. He has left a legacy of family, tradition and achievement.
Funeral services will be held at the LDS church, 1390 Hanz Dr, New Braunfels, TX 78131, Friday, March 17 at 10:00 am. Graveside services will be held at Hill Country Memorial Gardens at 2 pm.
