After 60 wonderful years, Edgar John "Blackie" Westbrook of New Braunfels passed away August 31, 2013. Edgar was born September 13, 1952 in New Braunfels, Texas to the late JC and Pearl Ann Westbrook. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patti Lyn Westbrook, children Christine Martinez and husband Mark, Corey Westbrook and wife Kathy, grandchildren Deprice, Miranda and Laken Martinez and Tyler Westbrook, brother Mike Westbrook and wife Pat, sister-in-law Cindy Mitchell and husband Keith, and mother and father-in-law Elrine and Archie Schmidt.
Edgar graduated from Canyon High School in 1972 and was a proud member of the Canyon Band. He was a remarkably talented drummer. During high school Edgar was also a member of Die Grosse Kapelle band which traveled throughout Europe on a six week tour. The band played together for nearly 20 years and reunions continue to this day. Edgar shared his musical talents with countless bands throughout his life.
Patti and Edgar met in ninth grade and were high school sweethearts. Patti followed Edgar and Die Grosse Kapelle band to Europe shortly after graduating high school. They married February 10, 1973.
All that knew Edgar loved him. He was a wonderful father to Christine and Corey and a remarkable grandfather to his four grandchildren. Very few grandchildren, in high school and middle school, look forward to spending a Saturday night with their grandparents, but Edgar's grandchildren were the exception to this. The grandchildren spend few Saturday nights away from him. He traveled with his family and loved taking them to Schlitterbahn on the weekends.
Edgar worked at C.H. Gunther and Sons for 30 years, most recently as a Project Engineer.
Edgar was a member of First Protestant Church. Contributions in his memory may be made to the First Protestant Youth Group or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be Wednesday Sept. 4th at Zoeller Funeral home from 6-8 pm with the family. The funeral will be held Thursday Sept. 5th at First Protestant Church at 11:00 am. The burial service will be at Comal Cemetery.
