September 11, 1933 – March 15, 2025
Ellen Loraine Englehart, age 91, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
Born in Irondale, Missouri, one of 5 daughters and one son, to Louis Albert Hardesty and Mildred Aloway Hardesty, she grew up as a “Hardesty Gal” on the Family Farm during the Depression. Not deterred, she attended Deaconess Nursing School, Missouri, after High School and became a Registered Nurse. Brave and adventuresome, she moved to Denver, Colorado and worked in the Surgery Ward at University Hospital. It would be in Denver’s suburb of Aurora, where she would meet the love of her life, Lt John R (Bob) Englehart who served as an Air Training Officer at the new Air Force Academy. Ellen was bit by the Aviation bug and became a Western Airlines Stewardess serving on DC-3s. When John proposed, they began a lifetime of love and were married in the Loan Air Base, France, Chapel on 4 December 1958 – they honeymooned in Paris! A lifetime Military Spouse she carried the family in more ways than one. Finally settling in San Antonio in 1970, Bob and Ellen enjoyed the Alamo City until Bob’s passing in 2017. A lifelong member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, she was an anchor of Faith. She even dusted off her RN license to volunteer at Wilford Hall during the Desert Storm crisis. She was caring in all things.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Bob Englehart, both her parents Louis & Mildred Hardesty, her sisters/husbands, Alma & Carl Wilken, Jean and Jack Shelley, Wilma & Claude Childers. She is survived by her sister Sue & Jim (deceased) Sherrell and her brother/wife, Louis (Sonny) & Susan Hardesty
Ellen is survived by her son/wife, Robert & Edith Englehart, and her daughter Karen Englehart Pizano. Her granddaughters, Kristin Englehart Johnson, Alyssa Englehart Baumann, and Eden Pizano. 3 great-granddaughters, Finley, Remy, Blake, & 2 great-grandsons, Calvin & Leon.
A family remembrance will be held in April in conjunction with Easter as we renew our faith in celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ and Victory over Death for all. Internment of cremated remains will occur later at the Air Force Academy cemetery as she reunites with Bob for a well-deserved peaceful eternity.
