

Gilberto L. Sanchez, Sergeant, U.S. Army, was born on October 21, 1931 to Bernardino Sanchez, Sr. and Coleta (Lopez) Sanchez in Comal County, Texas. He was presumed dead on December 31, 1953. Sergeant Sanchez was a medic with the Medical Company, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7 Th Infantry Division and was listed as Missing in Action while tending to wounded soldiers in the Chosin Reservoir conflict in North Korea on December 2, 1950. His remains were recently recovered and through DNA processes identified after 64 years.
Surviving relatives of Sgt. Sanchez include three brothers, Pablo Sanchez, Sr., Hiram Sanchez, and Benjamin Sanchez; five sisters, Maria Del Socorro Tinknell, Lupita Penrose, Elvira Cordova, Gloria Cardenas and Rosemary Iglesias; and numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives who have since passed are his parents, Bernardino and Coleta Sanchez; and five brothers, Augustin, Jesse, Arturo, and Bernardino Sanchez, Jr.
A Service of Remembrance will be held 6:00 PM Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the VFW Post 7110; 600 Peace Ave. New Braunfels, Texas. Public Visitation will begin 5:00 PM Thursday, January 22, 2015 at Zoeller Funeral Home with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue 8:00 AM Friday morning until 9:30 am when the service departs in procession to the church. Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church with Reverend Francios Rakotovoavy, MSF
& Reverend James Wasser, MSF – celebrants. Interment will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
