Born on March 15, 1947, in Lake Village, Arkansas, Herb grew up in nearby Eudora, where he was a phenomenal athlete. He attended State College of Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas, on a track and field scholarship. His love of sports lives on throughout his entire family.
Herb will be remembered for his sense of humor, his generosity, and his love of life. Whether playing a round of golf, cheering on his grandsons, or walking his beloved dogs through the neighborhood, Herb found joy in sharing the things he loved.
His career included serving as Vice President of Imperial Inspection Inc. in Lafayette, Louisiana; Operations Manager at Mobil Lab Inc. in Harvey, Louisiana; Operations Manager at Raytheon in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Operations Manager at National Inspection Services in Fort Worth, Texas.
Golf held a special place in Herb’s heart, and passing along that passion to his grandsons Luke and Spencer brought him great joy. He loved attending Luke’s golf tournaments and Spencer’s football playoff game. With Noah, he treasured playing basketball, enjoying milkshakes and root beer floats together, and cheering him on at his soccer games.
His golden retriever, Twinkie, and beagle, Coco, were cherished companions. Their long daily walks made the three of them a familiar sight throughout the neighborhood, where everyone knew them.
Herb loved visiting Kentucky’s horse farms and spending time at Keeneland each October. A talented horse racing handicapper, he learned the craft from his friend and coworker Mike Mire. He was especially proud of picking Golden Tempo, the 23–1 underdog who won the 2026 Kentucky Derby—and made sure his daughter told everyone about his winning pick.
Herb’s generosity extended beyond his family through his support of ChildFund, helping children in need.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Harvey and Margaret Simpson; his sister, Rachel Hartegan; and his niece, Jovona Kay Young.
He is survived by his children, Bradley Simpson (Mandy) of Maumelle, Arkansas, and Lori Crawford (Jody) of New Braunfels, Texas; his three grandsons, Spencer Simpson and his fiancée, Taylor Phillips, of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Luke Crawford and Noah Crawford, both of New Braunfels, Texas; his sister, Doris “DJ” Powell, and her husband, Judge Jim Powell, of Sargent, Texas; his nephew, John Helms (Regi) of League City, Texas; his niece, Carrie Rosales (Richard) of Menard, Texas; and the mother of his beloved children, Jean Simpson of Lafayette, Louisiana.
Herb leaves his family and friends with treasured memories of his laughter, his generosity, and the joy he took in life. His love of golf lives on with Luke and Spencer, and the memories he made with each of his grandsons will remain a cherished part of his legacy.
Per his wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Details will be shared with family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in his memory to ChildFund or the ASPCA.
