

Rip was a flight engineer in the United States Air Force. He flew missions during the Korean War, and continued through the Cold War and Vietnam War with the Military Airlift Command (MAC) and Strategic Air Command (SAC). He retired from the USAF after 20 years of service in 1968. After 10 years in private industry Rip went to work for the Defense Logistics Agency as a Quality Assurance Representative. He retired from the Air Force and Defense Logistics Agency with a total of 35 years of Federal Service.
Rip was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, baptized in 1942, in Kirkland, Texas. Rip and Shirley were members of the San Pedro Church of Christ until moving to New Braunfels in 2014.
Rip was an avid hunter and had more than a passing interest in guns and rifles. He loved cars, birds and cats. His faithful cat Ricky Bobby was at his side until the end of his life.
Rip was preceded in death by his parents Gladys and Offie, siblings Maylan Abbananto and husband Pat, Ben Denton and wife Nina, and Dorothy Glover and husband Bud.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years Shirley Denton, son James R. Denton, Jr., daughter Donna Farris and husband Bill. Grandchildren Justin Farris and wife Ashley, Rachel Farris, Patrick and Julia Denton. Great grandchildren Sadie and Ellis Farris along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on January 19, 2017 at 11:30 am at the San Pedro Church of Christ, 311 Jackson Keller Rd, San Antonio Texas, followed by a procession to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery for the Committal Service at 1:15 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Fisher House Ministry at Northside Church of Christ or mailed to Fisher House BAMC, Attn: Inge Godfrey, 3623 George C. Beach Rd., Ft. Sam Houston, TX 78234.
