She was preceded in death by her parents and parents in law Robert and Elenora Zercher. Her husband Alroy (Red) Zercher, daughter Debra Evans, brothers and sister in laws Harvey Jarisch (Mary Ann) and Bennet (Guy) Jarisch (Shirley). Sisters Tressie Russell, Louella Pittman and brother-in-law Rod Pittman. Two nephews and one great nephew.
She is survived by brother-in-law Jerry Zercher (Janice), daughters Donna Zercher-Kott (Billy), Deana Smith (Kenneth), son Darryl Zercher (Donna), and son-in-law Sam Evans, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Janet and Red made their home in the Solms area where they raised 4 children. Throughout her life she enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with family. She was one of the first employees of Naegelin’s Bakery where she learned the art of baking and decorating cakes of all shapes and sizes. She was employed there for 15 years after which she finished her working years at E.R. Carpenter in New Braunfels. During her years of working in New Braunfels she was privileged to be near the parade route. She grew to love the Comal County Fair parade and fair. She would spend hours walking through the exhibit halls admiring all the crafts, canned items, cakes, antiques and quilts.
Family trips included weekend stays at the beach where fishing and relaxing were the only activities. After her oldest daughter moved to near Houston she spent as much time as possible visiting her and her family. She enjoyed the one and only cruise she went on to the Caribbean with Debra’s family. She recalled often how beautiful the ship and the ocean were.
The family moved to the Garden Ridge area in the early 1980’s where she and Red planted two separate gardens and competed on who would produce the best tomatoes, cucumbers and anything else they could fit in.
She sewed many outfits for her daughters and grandchildren. She taught all the girls how to sew. She also handmade Thanksgiving and Christmas items that could be used as décor and gave many as gifts. She also loved to crochet and taught anyone that asked to learn. She baby-sat her youngest granddaughter and took great pride in teaching her about the birds of Texas and other facts of nature.
One of her greatest joys in life after she retired was going on road trips with her sister Tressie. Their travels kept them in Texas but none the less sleeping in the car at rest stops, enjoying each other’s company and our beautiful state was their “thing”.
The last few years she has been dealing with the effects of dementia which required skilled nursing home care. She entered the caring Colonial Manor Nursing &Rehab Center in her beloved New Braunfels. The administrator, doctors, nurses and social workers took exceptional care of her during this trying time in her life. Special thanks to all of them for their care. In addition, the care and support provided by Hope Hospice to her and our family is greatly appreciated.
