John E. Wommack was born in New Braunfels, Texas on May 12, 1951. He was the son of Christiana Eiband Wommack and Max R. Wommack. As a young boy, John enjoyed exploring and making mischief around the streets of New Braunfels. He attended New Braunfels public schools and graduated from New Braunfels High School in 1969. John attended Sam Houston State University and graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1974 with a degree in Law Enforcement.
John proudly returned to the streets of New Braunfels that he once explored when he was hired as a police officer. He served the New Braunfels Police Department for 34 years, retiring in 2008 as a Lieutenant. Retirement only lasted for three weeks, and John was hired as the Field Safety Supervisor for Dean Word Company in October 2008. He enjoyed this job until his retirement in December 2025.
Time outside was important to John, and his favorite hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, and target shooting. Indoors, he enjoyed reading and watching westerns. When he and Gayna were not at one of the many New Braunfels activities they enjoyed, they were in College Station at their grandchildren’s events or relaxing in Galveston. He was a member of the Guadalupe Valley Peace Officers Association, Sons of the American Revolution, St. Paul Lutheran Church, and a life member of the National Rifle Association. John was also a past member of the Geronimo Volunteer Fire Department, the New Braunfels Police Officer’s Association, and the New Braunfels Breakfast Lions.
On March 9, 2026, John peacefully passed away at home in his sleep, and now rests in his eternal home. He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Anita Engelke Wommack, father-in-law Clinton Guenther, and Gayna’s infant sister Laurie Guenther. John is survived by Gayna, his wife of 50 years, his son Chris Wommack, daughter Alyssa Locklear, her husband Chance, grandson Cade, and granddaughter Annie. He is also survived by his brother Max Wommack, Jr., his wife Janis, nephew Travis and his family, and nephew Lance and his family, as well as his mother-in-law Joyce Guenther, sister-in-law Gerry Petty, and niece Amanda Killian and her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church (777 West San Antonio Street, New Braunfels, TX 78130, www.nbstpaul.org) or Hope Hospice New Braunfels (611 Walnut Avenue, New Braunfels, TX 18130, www.hopehospice.net).
Earth has no sorrow that heaven can’t heal.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on March 12, 2026, at St Paul Lutheran Church, 777 W San Antonio St, New Braunfels, Texas 78130.
