Kenneth was born on February 19, 1947, in Bainbridge, Maryland, to David and Pauline Harpster. He grew up with a curious mind, a big heart, and an easy smile that drew people in wherever he went. He attended Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School in Pharr, Texas, and later graduated from Howard Payne University before earning his Master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
On April 7, 1977, Kenneth married, Rebekah “Becky” Ann Harpster, at Baptist Temple Church in San Antonio, TX. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, faith, and deep love. Their bond was one of those rare and beautiful partnerships that inspired everyone around them.
For nearly 23 years, Kenneth served as a chaplain at Buckner Villas, where he became a beloved part of so many lives. He had a gift for listening, comforting, and finding just the right words when people needed them most. Whether offering prayer, sharing a story, or simply lending a helping hand, Kenneth brought light into every room he entered. Many remember him as “the guy who could fix anything”—especially your computer or TV—but even more so as someone who made you feel seen, cared for, and loved. Before his years as chaplain, Kenneth and Becky served as house parents to 16 boys and 10 girls over the course of eight years—a role that perfectly reflected their shared love, patience, and calling to care for others. Their time as house parents left a lasting impact on countless young lives. Following that, they continued their ministry with positions in Killeen and Kingsland, where Kenneth’s faith and compassion continued to shine through in every community they served. During his college days, Harpo was part of a close-knit group of friends known as “The Rejects.” That group, and the laughter and friendship they shared, remained an important part of his life.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Birtie Otto and Cora Belle Harpster, and Lewis and Geneva Platt; his father, David Lewis Harpster; his mother, Pauline Harpster; his sister, Paulette Harbison; and several aunts and uncles who welcomed him home with open arms.
Kenneth is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Becky; his daughter, Alyssa Harpster; his son, Jeremiah Harpster (Nicole); and his adored grandchildren, McKenna, Easton, and McKinley, who brought endless joy to his heart. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family, and a lifetime of cherished friends.
A celebration of Kenneth’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at First Baptist Church in New Braunfels, Texas, with Pastor Brad McLean officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Zoeller Funeral Home. Flower arrangements may be sent directly to First Baptist Church.
The family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in his memory.
Kenneth will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his humor, his kindness, and his ability to make everyone feel special. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and compassion—and his memory will forever be a blessing to those who knew him.
