just shy of her 91st birthday. Mamie was born on December 19, 1934 in Karnes County to Elmo and Albina Seeger. She resided in Texas her whole life, having gone to school in Karnes City. While in high school she flourished as a Drum Majorettte.
Mamie married Elo Henke on July 17, 1954 and “adopted” Elo’s large family. They enjoyed 47 years together until Elo preceded her in 2001. After living in Karnes County, they moved to San Antonio for a
while, where they enjoyed living next door to relatives as neighbors, and eventually on to New Braunfels in 1971. During those years of marriage they raised six daughters; Sandy Kiesling, Pam (Gary) Barr,
Sherry (Steven) Haas, Suzanne (Chris Martin) Henke, Julie Henke and Amy (James) Taylor. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren with the 37th baby due in April, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by grandsons P.J. Ullrich and Kolby Taylor and her brother Elroy Seeger.
As one can probably imagine Mamie had no trouble filling her days. In the early part of her marriage she was busy being a supportive wife to Elo and mother to six young girls. In her middle and later years she had many avenues of enjoyment. She was an avid San Antonio Spurs fan and watched them on TV as often as she could. If you happened to be around while she was watching, it was better not to talk and avoid calling her to chat on the phone. Mamie enjoyed her role as a grandmother and treated the grandkids to as much love as possible, always looking forward to their visits and family functions. Playing “Left, Center, Right” dice game with the kids was a favorite. She attended water aerobics with friends at Das Rec and over the years made good use of her green thumb with her numerous gardens and green plants.
To say Mamie was a seamstress is a clear understatement. With her top of the line equipment she sewed Prom dresses and Bridal dresses for numerous young ladies. When it came time for Wurstfest she made dirndls for Oma’s and Opa vests for the Wurstfest Association. In collaboration with daughter Pam who collected old Barbie Dolls from Resale Shops, she refreshed them with new clothes that she made, and donated them to Sts. Peter and Paul Thrift Shop. Mamie sewed upright walker saddle bags for people that could use them. Mamie loved to crochet. Over the years she donated hundreds of lap quilts that she made to churches, Meals On Wheels and Nursing Homes. She made blankets for the animals at the Humane Society. No fabric went to waste, she would make something with it. Mamie was a devout Catholic and when she couldn’t attend services at Sts. Peter and Paul, she faithfully observed online. She served on the Church’s Bereavement Committee.
A memorial service will be held at Zoeller Funeral Home at 615 Landa Street, New Braunfels, Texas on December 19th, 2025. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30AM with a Rosary and Service to follow. A reception is to follow at Freiheit Country Store. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Hope Hospice or Sts. Peter and Paul Thrift Store.
