Marion M. Pickett of New Braunfels, Texas went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the age of 93. He was born on March 18, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas to Jacob E. and Gladys Marie Pickett (nee Bishop). He was the third of three children. Marion graduated from Harlandale High School in 1942. He immediately joined the United States Navy, serving in both the Pacific and Atlantic campaigns. Achieving the rank of First Class Petty Officer. After WWII he returned home to San Antonio and furthered his education attending St. Mary’s University. He earned a degree in Economics and Business. Marion worked at Kelly Air Force Base, retiring after 25 years in 1971. He and his wife of 56 years, Hildegard, opened a used furniture store Handy Corner Furniture Co. on the south side of San Antonio. They closed the store and retired in 1998.
Marion was an Honorary Life Member of the American Legion Walton F. Hoffmann Memorial Post 179 in New Braunfels and a member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. of New Braunfels.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob E. and Gladys Marie Pickett, first wife, Hildegard G. Pickett; in-laws, Mr. B and Mami Jensen; brother, Melvin R. Pickett; sister, Vida Mae Williamson and granddaughter, Tanya Jo Hood-Adams.
Marion is survived by his second wife of 14 years, Joyce Slack Pickett; daughter, Deborah Ann Hood and Husband Rodney L. Hood of Spring Branch; son, James R. Pickett of Spring Branch; grandsons, Rodney L. Hood Jr. and James R. Pickett Jr; great-grandsons, Brandon Hood, Rodney L. Hood III, Riley Hood, and Gavyn Smith; and step children, Ruth L. Houser and husband Jerry, Melba Joy Holden and husband Raymond, and Donald R. Slack; and step grandchildren, Jay P. Houser and Michael D. Houser.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 5-7 pm at Zoeller Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 12 noon at Zoeller Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:00 pm.
