-Proverbs 31:10
Mary Margaret (Conrad) Owens passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior for her much deserved rest on September 3rd 2017 at the age of 89. Born July 15th, 1928 to Joseph and Margie Conrad, Mary lived in San Antonio, TX all of her early life and graduated from St. Gerard’s Catholic School. At the age of 21 she met a dashing airman named David Owens at a USO dance. The following year she and Dave were married on February 25th, 1950. They celebrated 63 wonderful years together until Dave’s passing in September of 2013. We rejoice knowing Dave and Mary are together once again.
Mary’s short stature may have earned her the nickname of Tiny, but she was an absolute giant of spirit and determination. “Larger than life” is more than fitting for this feisty redhead, even though she was less than 5 feet tall. Mary was a lifelong and devoted believer in Jesus Christ and member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church for 56 years. Her life was filled with faith, family, and friends; and her days were filled with the constant chatter of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
Mary loved dancing, singing, travelling, and the San Antonio Spurs. Her sense of humor set her apart- all of us will well remember laughing along with her to one of her many stories. Mary’s life work was taking care of her large family and serving her community- both of which she did tirelessly. She was a member of many church and civic organizations, including: St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Choir, the Elk’s Lodge, American Legion, Eagle’s Auxiliary, Comal County Fair Association, Wurstfest Association, Christian Women Club, Carousel Dance Club, and many others. And yet, even with such an extensive list of service, she still always made her family and friends her priority.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Margie Conrad, husband Dave, sister Patsy Schmahlenberger, infant daughters Linda Kathryn and Lois Marie, and beloved grandson Craig Ott.
She is survived by her seven children and their spouses: David Jr. (Cyndy), Michael (Susan), Margaret (Don), Jimmy (Beth), Kathy (Don), Bobby (Sandra) and John (Tracy) as well as 34 grandchildren, and 47 great-grandchildren.She is also survived by her brothers Joseph (Betty) and Terry Conrad along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We all feel blessed to have had such an amazing woman touch our lives and teach us so well by the example she set. Her legacy to us is one of love for God, family, friends and a passion for service for others. We’ll miss her dearly and she will live on in our hearts forever.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6pm-8pm at Zoeller Funeral Home. Service will be Friday at 1pm at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with internment following at Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church for their many ministries, or to the charity of your choice.
