Mary Lou Poloskey (Maria Dela Luz Valdez Zapata Poloskey) passed away Friday, October 2, 2026, in Cedar Park, TX, at age 90. Mary was born on December 15, 1935, in San Antonio, Texas. Her parents were Antonio O. Zapata and Augustina Valdez Zapata.
Mary met her husband, Patrick Joseph Poloskey, Sr., at a dance in San Antonio, where Mary lived, and Patrick was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base. They raised three children: Patrick Joseph Jr., Robert Charles, and Susan Marie.
During Patrick’s military career, the family had the opportunity to live in Norfolk, England, and Naples, Italy. Mary was a military wife, taking care of her children and family’s needs. While in Italy, Mary easily picked up the Italian language and would frequently venture out on her own to explore the local markets. Together, Mary and Patrick involved both their sons in baseball, basketball, and football. Mary spent many afternoons cheering at their games. There were many picnics at Carney Park and lazy afternoons at the nearby Italian beach. The family visited the Vatican in Rome and traveled with Robert’s All-Star Little League team to Belgium and Germany.
After Patrick’s military retirement, the family returned to San Antonio. In 1971, Mary went to night school to earn her G.E.D. She then worked in the administrative offices at Rhodes Dept. Store in Wonderland Mall. Around 1974, Mary began a long and storied career at Security Service Federal Credit Union, where she worked her way up from loan processor to loan officer. Later, she was promoted to the Bandera Road Branch Manager and, finally, the Jr. Vice President over Lending. Mary had great customer service skills, she was smart and self-motivated, and she loved taking care of her SSFCU members.
In her retirement, Mary spent time with Patrick working on the property of their home in North San Antonio Hills. They enjoyed the outdoors, planting flowers, trimming trees, and relaxing with a cold beer on their backyard swing. On weekends, Mary loved cooking her family’s favorite recipes, including cheese enchiladas, Spanish rice, and beans.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Antonio and Augustina; her husband, Patrick, and daughter-in-law Annick Monique Poloskey; her siblings, Josephine Zapata, Margarita Zapata, Pedro Antonio Zapata, Pauline Venegas, and Gabriel Zapata.
