Melvin G. Voigt, 82 years of age, gained his Angel wings on December 31, 2018. He was born to Arno and Natalia (Froelich) Voigt in Guadalupe County on February 25, 1936. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, J.L. Sanders; son Gregory, brothers, Arno Voigt and Raleigh and Jimmy Sanders, sisters, Leora Schwab, Jana Lee Morger and Ida Bushkuhl, and his in-laws, Gregor and Marie Hildebrand.
On June 24, 1958, he married the love of his life and the mother of his children, Helen Hildebrand. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen; daughters Bernice Voigt and Laura (Randy) Newsom, sons, Matthew (Patricia) Voigt, Nathan (Donna) Voigt and Arno Voigt, brother-in-laws, Elton Schwab, Jimmie Morger, Michael Bushkuhl, Reinhold Hildebrand, Hilmar (Catherine) Hildebrand and sister-in-law, Betty Wriston, grandchildren, Jessica (Drew) Escamilla, Serena Voigt, Mattie Voigt (Austin Lunday), Brandon (Rachel) Voigt, Alexis Newsom and Tina (Shawn) Walters, and great-grandchildren, Ava and Miley Escamilla, Kennedy and Braxten Lunday and Dustin Walters, and numerous nieces and nephews and his companion, Bubba Chocolate.
Melvin worked in the textile mill his adult life. He loved teaching his children to cook, hunt and fish. He enjoyed being around people and always helping anyone that needed him.
Melvin taught his family – sons and daughters and grandchildren and anyone that would listen, the finer points of life. He was the original “River Rat” because he could run a trout line and catch fish on bananas and just about anything. He taught them to process a deer from the shot to the sausage.
He loved building benches and tables with his own designs. He made picnic tables for his family and for the Mission of Divine Mercy. He was a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus 4183. He also loved to bowl 9-pin and 10-pin. Melvin was a strong faithful man that loved everyone. He could grow a garden and fruit trees anywhere. If anyone needed eggs, just ask Melvin.
He never said a bad word about anybody; and he never met a person he didn’t like.
Melvin will be greatly missed by all that knew him. We would like to thank Hope Hospice of New Braunfels and Dr. Alvarado.
