Shirley Louise (Braden) Spinney

Shirley Louise (Braden) Spinney, age 90, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by family, on July 29, 2026. She was a cherished and beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Shirley was born on August 7, 1935 in D’Hanis, TX. Growing up in Hondo, TX, she was a member of the Hondo High School Owls basketball team, pep squad, and yearbook staff. After graduating high school, she enjoyed working and traveling across the United States as a stewardess with TransWorld Airlines. Soon after, Shirley met the love of her life, Allan, whom she married November 1, 1958.

Shirley and Allan treasured their life together, raising two daughters and serving over twenty years in the United States Air Force, with assignments across the globe including Okinawa, Japan; Tacoma, Washington; and Travis AFB, California. They returned to central Texas in 1979, settling in New Braunfels. There, she established a career at Texas Commerce Bank, retiring after many years of service. She was a longtime parishioner of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Shirley’s passions included sewing and quilting, and she lovingly created innumerable outfits, Halloween costumes, and masterful quilts for her family. She was a talented cook and baker, with her delicious ‘Nani Cookies’ being coveted favorites of her granddaughters and great-grandsons. She was happiest when family filled her home for holidays, birthdays, and weekend dinners. A true matriarch, she led and loved her multigenerational family with great care, compassion, and grace.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Suzanne Smith (David) of New Braunfels, TX, and Diane Spinney (Denise) of Buda, TX; granddaughters Alyssa Absher (Judd) of Round Rock, TX, and Chelsea Meyer (Travis) of Austin, TX; great-grandsons James, Smith, and Owen; many nieces and nephews, and her beloved pup, Molly.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Freida Braden, and her cherished husband, Major Allan R. Spinney.

A Public Viewing & Visitation will be held at Zoeller Funeral Home, 615 Landa St, New Braunfels, Texas 78130, on August 12, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

A Committal Service for the family will take place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, Texas 78209 at a later date.
