With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Velia "Betty" Monsivais. At age 71, she was called to be with the Lord on September 2, 2026. Velia was born on April 6, 1955, in Fentress, Texas, to Albert and Rosa Torres. She married Ruben Monsivais on September 1, 1998.
She is survived by her children: Velma Martinez (Jammy), Bernice Triesch, John Carlo Triesch (Gloria), Melinda Monsivais (Mark), Melissa Martinez (Stormy), and Juanita Ortega (Robert); her grandchildren: John Carlo Triesch II, Ashley Nicole Owens, Hunter Lee Perry (Skyler), Donovan Paul Perry, Gabriel Triesch, Isaac Triesch, Layla Ybarra-Perez, and Adrian Mark Villarreal; and her great-grandson, Xander Zamora. And her siblings: Diana Viallejo (John), Ventura Acosta, Nelda Morales, John Torres (Martha), Elizabeth Ramos (Roberto), Eli Torres, Norma Vargas (Sergio). She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben Monsivais; her brother in laws, Roland Morales and Bobby Acosta; her children, John Edward Martinez and Rosa Anita Hernandez; and her parents, Albert and Rosa Torres.
Velia was born in Fentress but called New Braunfels her home. She was married to Ruben for 24 wonderful years. She loved her pets, Hershey and Snickers, cherished her family, and always enjoyed a cold beer. Many of her friends knew her as "Betty," but if you ask her sisters, no one knows where the nickname came from—"Betty" just stuck. She regularly maintained two jobs to provide for her family, but in her spare time, she was passionate about showing her love through food. Whether it was driving an hour away for BBQ or going to the Chinese place down the road, she loved going out to eat and taking those she loved with her. Velia also spent a lot of time in the kitchen, preparing her "lava hot sauce" or making tacos that she would go out of her way to deliver. Velia was a strong-willed and stubborn woman who was fiercely passionate in her opinions and her actions.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Zoeller Funeral Home. Arrivals will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the recitation of the Holy Rosary.
