She was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania to Helen Finkel and William Rockey of Altoona on September 12, 1925. She attended Altoona High School and graduated from Lock Haven State Teacher’s College in May of 1948 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Education. She was employed by the Altoona School District as a Girls’ Physical Education Teacher at Keith Jr. High School.
Virginia married the love of her life, Donald Harry Nale on June 8th, 1952. They were happily married for 65 years. They moved across the country several times and Virginia grew busy with raising three children. Virginia was always surrounded by love and friendship and had a gift making friends wherever they lived. She sang in the church choir and loved ping pong, bowling, water aerobics, swimming, cards, puzzles, and watching basketball games. As the children grew older, Virginia completed more course work at Wichita State University, and was employed by the Wichita Public School system as a Special Education Teacher at Brooks Jr. High. Virginia and Don ended up in Phillip’s Ranch, California, where Virginia was active at her church in Claremont for 35 years, singing in the church choir and singing weekly at a local nursing home. When Don passed away in 2018, Virginia moved to Texas to live with her daughter and son in law. Following surgery several years later, she moved into the Assisted Living Memory Care unit at Eden Hill Communities, where she continued raising her voice in song to the Lord, where she was beloved and made many dear friends.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Helen and William Rockey, sister Lucille (Rockey) Nale Clapper, and loving husband Donald Nale. She is survived by her three children Mark (Judi), Pam (Nale) Kurczewski (Tim), and Matt (Nancy) and four grandchildren, Eric Nale, Christina (Nale) McGee, Emily (Nale) Zendejas and Kyle Kurczewski.
Funeral services will be held at Peace Lutheran Church of New Braunfels on 11:00 AM Saturday, July 22, 2023 with a small reception to follow. Interment will be at Alto Reste Cemetery in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
