Charles “David" Martin, Jr., 66, passed away suddenly on February 28, 2015 at Hartford Hospital. He is the son of the late Charles D. and Virgina C. Martin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia B. Martin of New Britain, his daughter Laurel Hope of Los Angeles, CA., son Charles Everett of Seattle, Washington, and brother Robert E. Martin of Annapolis, MD. His step children include Michael, Paul, Sarah and Ryan Kolej, their spouses, Abby, Eva, Nicole, Brendan and six grandchildren, Zachariah, Matthew, Isabella, Jackson, Evan and Giuliana. David also had many cousins in the Pacific Northwest (Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon) and Virginia.
David was born in Anchorage, Alaska and lived in New York, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy, Morocco, and California, before settling in Alexandria, VA.
He attended Bates College and upon graduating served with the Peace Corps teaching in South Korea. David earned a Master’s degree in Urban Planning from Michigan State University, working in that capacity in Waycross, GA. and Cromwell, CT. More recently he worked for the Central Connecticut Regional Planning Agency and the CT Siting Council.
David was an avid ballroom dancer, active in slam poetry, did free-lance writing for local newspapers, was editor for Hanover Press, Newtown, CT. He enjoyed tennis, tai chi, qi gong, hiking, and was a Reiki volunteer at a local hospital. David was Secretary of the New Britain Arts Alliance and contributed his many talents to a wide variety of artistic and community endeavors.
Memorial services will be held Saturday March 7th, 1-4 p.m. at New Britain Memorial Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, CT. A celebration-of-life sharing will be held from 3-4 p.m.
