José had the most beautiful smile and the best sense of humor. The year I became queen at the club he was my escort. I was nervous about all the attention and he just kept telling me jokes to make me feel more comfortable. While he was working at the hospital I had to take my aunts in for some tests and he always made an effort to come out and say hello to them and make them smile. I did a project for the department of social services and I ended up going to the office where he worked. When he saw me he came out and gave me a big hug. He was so bright, energetic, professional, family oriented and a warm-hearted person. He will be missed terribly.

We are so sad not to be able to be with you today in the spiritual celebration of Jose, truly an everyday servant of God.
We miss not being a part of the sadness felt by everyone at St. John’s today .
We pray that you and your family will find peace and comfort in the memories and love people will share and have so beautifully expressed all week... what a testament to a man who truly made a difference in this world.
We will be with you in spirit.
Peace, Ron and Aurora

We are very sorry to hear of Jose's passing. He was a kind, compassionate , and loving man. His welcoming smile always made you feel at ease. He had a way of lifting your spirits no matter how down you felt. Jose and Pillar, you did a great job raising your son. Scott and Aimee, you should have seen how his eyes lit up when he talked about you. Laura, you could not have been with a better guy. We will miss you Jose. We are better for having known you. May your memory be eternal. Andy and Lil Grogoza

To the Escales family and Lovely Laura,

Please except my most sincere condolences on the passing of Jose. I worked with Jose for over 25 years and during that time he was always KIND, professional, and dedicated. He had the brightest smile and the biggest laugh to go along with his great sense of humor. When such a light like Jose leaves this world, it is a loss for us all.

“May peace, mercy and love be yours in abundance.”

As far as fathers go, Joe Escales has been exemplary. The proof is in the infinite love his family holds for him. I don’t know what it’s like to lose a father. At least I didn’t until now. “Papa Joe” earned his loving nickname from us “adopted kids” because of our admiration for him. He was our comedian, consigliere, and confidant. I don’t think there was ever a time I was with Aimee that we didn’t call Papa Joe; whether it was to ask him a silly “adulting” question, share a funny/embarrassing story, or just plain bother him with our nonsense. Either way, our calls were always welcomed with smiles, without judgement (which was very important), and all the wisdom of the world. He still answered the phone so we couldn’t have been that bad.

As far as humans go, Papa Joe has been extraordinary. The proof is in the adoration of all who knew him. His warmth and generosity knew no bounds. His strength and spirit were unwavering. His smile was infectious and truly inspirational. I know that I will strive to be or do just a little better every day because of him and his genuine good nature and positive attitude. And although I love him for all these things, I love him most for giving me a lifelong best friend who carries "most" of these attributes. So, thank you Papa Joe for enriching my life and the lives of those all around you. You will be in our hearts always. In his honor, I encourage everyone to keep smiling that big infectious Joe smile so that his love continues to enhance the lives of and inspire those around us

I’m so very sorry to hear of Jose’s passing. I had the great pleasure of working with him via many phone calls between City and State welfare. Jose never ever had an unkind word about anyone. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. My sincerest condolences to his family. He always had a smile. On occasion I saw him at New Britain General Hospital when he worked there and he was happy helping the patients and employees navigating the system!
Rest In Peace dear Jose!
